Bonjour les amis! Voici le chapitre 5 de « Le Petit Prince ». C’est le chapitre où le célèbre baobab apparaît. Est-ce que vous connaissez le baobab? Ci-dessous est la photo du baobab dans la réalité.
Eng: Hello friends! This is chapter 5 of The Little Prince. This is the chapter where the famous baobab tree appears. Do you know the baobab? Below is a photo of the baobab in real life.
les uns sur les autres - on top of each other
« Il faudrait les mettre les uns sur les autres… » (You'd have to put them on top of each other...) I thought it was a little odd to have multiple ‘un’ like ‘les uns’ in this sentence, but it is a proper way to say on top each other!
prendre fantaisie à - fancy
« Elles dorment dans le secret de la terre jusqu’à ce qu’il prenne fantaisie à l’une d’elles de se réveiller. » (They sleep in the secrecy of the earth until one of them fancies waking up.)
inoffensive - harmless
« Alors elle s’étire, et pousse d’abord timidement vers le soleil une ravissante petite brindille inoffensive. » (So she stretches, and at first shyly pushes a lovely little harmless twig towards the sun.)
il s’agit de vs c’est
Il s'agit de: "it's about" or "it's a matter of." It is used to introduce or specify the subject or topic being discussed. It is used when explaining or clarifying something. (formal)
« Il s'agit de comprendre les différences entre ces deux expressions. » (It's about understanding the differences between these two expressions.)
« Il s'agit de la vie d'un artiste célèbre. » (It’s about the life of a famous artist.)
C'est: "it is" or "this is." It is used to identify, describe, or define something or someone. (formal and informal)
« C'est un beau jour aujourd'hui. » (It's a beautiful day today.)
« C'est difficile de comprendre cela. » (It's difficult to understand that.)
Did you realise both il s’agit de and c’est are translated as it is in English, but has different nuance in French?
Imparfait vs. Present Tense
« Or il y avait des graines terribles sur la planète du petit prince… c’étaient les graines de baobabs. » (But there were some terrible seeds on the Little Prince's planet... they were baobab seeds.)
Here is an extra sentence for you in present tense to identify the difference between the two tenses and how it is used 😄
« Or il y a des graines terribles sur la planète du petit prince… ce sont les graines de baobabs. » (But there are terrible seeds on the little prince's planet… they are baobab seeds.)
C’est la photo du baobab dans la nuit. Magnifique, n’est-ce pas? J’ai découvert cet arbre grâce à ce livre. Et vous?
